What Is Fasting?

Matthew 6:16-18 (NIV) “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Fasting is a long lost spiritual discipline that if rediscovered, will revolutionize your walk with Jesus. Fasting is an invitation to step through a door to a deeper, more intimate, more powerful relationship with Jesus. It’s a moment when you personally volunteer, “Lord, I am breaking out of the routine of the regular ritual of life because I am unsatisfied!” It’s a lifestyle hack, “Lord, you love me whether I do this or not, but I WANT MORE!”

A re-positioning of your spiritual posture, positioning your heart to burn with the embers of revival. In the Bible, Jesus fasted, Moses & Elijah fasted, Paul, Peter, the early church fasted. If you are a believer you will fast! In Matthew 6:16 Jesus said “When you fast…” Not if you fast, or one day, He said to you and I, when you fast! Fasting means “to cover your mouth and refuse to eat.” It’s a surrendered time for a deep spiritual examination. It’s a spiritual discipline; going without food or any other regularly enjoyed gift from God. Jesus also says “what is done in secret, will be rewarded!”

Wow, there is an incredible reward on the other side of your decision to spend this time to fast & pray with Jesus. Get ready, doors will be flung open, miraculous provision will find you, favor will come chasing you down. Let’s continue to press into this fast and see God do amazing things in our lives and in our region.

Much love, Pastor Aaron
